End to early GCSEs?

Education secretary Michael Gove has written to Sir Michael Wilshaw, chief inspector, to ask him to look into how the practice of entering pupils for GCSEs before the end of Y11 can be “discouraged”.

When entering early pupils (nationally) get fewer A and A*s (about 10% less) and there is a suggestion that pupils can be ‘scared off’ a variety of subjects by an approach that is too pressured.

Obviously this refers to a National average and there will be specific cases where early entry is desired but hopefully this will help to balance the debate about ‘compressed KS3’ which has added fuel to the demotion of ICT at GCSE level.
