The BBC Radio 4 series, A History of the World in 100 Objects recently concluded with it’s final choice – a rechargable lamp.
This announcement reminded me about an article about the refinement (not discovery) of the electric light by Eddison. It struck me as odd that, almost 130 years after electric light became feasible and the massive changes this brought to the world, here we are with large swathes of the world still without.
Interesting contrast with mobile phone technology where this seems to have taken hold in the developing world much faster. It made me wonder about the relative benefits brought by communication and light.
BTW – the rest of the 100 objects have so much to say about ICT – well worth a look.
