Despite the fears of the late adopters it seems that SMS hasn’t been a linguistic disaster at all.  Indeed you can look back quite a long way and find a variety of similar cases, like these:

  • YY U R YY U B I C U R YY 4 ME  – (“Too wise you are . . .”)
  • SWALK
  • IOU

The article is quite long but makes lots of good points.
