Byron Report update

The DCSF has just announced that it it to speed up the implementation of the Byron report and has started to release details.  In brief there are 6 main points, these are:

• UK Council for Child Internet Safety
(Single point of contact – overseeing body etc)

• Better Regulation
This will be the responsibility of the council (above), probably self regulatory standards for industries to sign up to.

• Public Information and Awareness Campaign
New government major child safety awareness campaign which will begin in summer 2008 (£9m budget)

• Better Education
Working with Ofsted, schools and other services are important partners to equipping Children and Parents to stay safe online …  this includes an increased emphasis on internet safety in the new ICT Curriculum for Key Stage 3 in September 2008.

• Reforming the classification system for video games
Consultation process to start

• Information and support to parents on video games
Consult and agree a set of standards for in-store information to ensure age-appropriate gaming.
