A group of people (including Google) have got together to create an ’open source’ mobile phone.
The project, called Android, will allow people to develop their own software that can tie in directly with the phones operating system. This means that anyone will be able to write applications for mobile phones. The idea is to stimulate development and innovation.
There is a software development kit coming out in a week or so but no hardware yet. Several major phone manufacturers are in the consortium and plan to bring out new hardware (ie phones) in the second half of 2008.
